Malaria: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

blog images

Malaria is one of the major health concerns throughout the world. Malaria is caused by the plasmodium parasite, spread through mosquito bites. There are 4 types of Malaria, two of which are common in India, Plasmodium Falciparum and Plasmodium Vivax.

Despite being a preventable and curable disease, Malaria claimed about 14 Lakh lives in 2022. At Modern Diagnostic and Research Centre, we are committed to decimating the number of fatalities caused by the disease. With early and accurate testing, the disease can be controlled to a greater extent reducing the number of severe cases and limiting the disease.

Why Malaria test is important

Malaria cases can turn severe with time if the treatment gets delayed which in some cases can prove fatal. With timely detection and accurate analysis, the number of cases turning fatal can be reduced to a mere fraction, ultimately resulting in a low fatality rate and easy recovery. Modern Diagnostic and Research Centre with their mission to ensure a “Malaria Free India”, offers Malaria tests at a price affordable to all.

Symptoms

Malaria has some common symptoms making it difficult to detect at an early stage, some of the symptoms are common with that of a common flu. People suffering from Malaria are likely to have a high fever and sweat along with headaches, body aches, and chest pain to the extent of trouble breathing.

In Addition to the above symptoms, the infected patient will constantly feel fatigued as well as chills that shake the whole body while having diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. In the case of severe Malaria, patients are more likely to get anemic and induce jaundice

A severe case of Malaria can result in a coma, also known as Cerebral Malaria and in some cases can prove fatal.

Types of test

Modern Diagnostic and Research Centre offers two tests for Malaria, the Malaria Antigen test and the Malaria Smear test respectively. The Smear test, being a quality-driven test provides detailed information about the illness including the severe nature of the disease.

On the other hand, the Malaria Antigen test provides quick results regarding whether the patient is infected with the disease or not. The Malaria Antigen test is a better test to confirm the Malaria Infection as it is quick and has a lower margin of human error. You can order a Malaria test at home from our website and our trained phlebotomist will contact you to collect the blood sample at the convenience of your home at your preferred time.

Malaria Antigen test

The Malaria Antigen test is one of the most trusted Malaria tests among doctors. In comparison to other tests the Malaria Antigen test is widely popular as it is quick and is less susceptible to human error. The Malaria Antigen test can give you an accurate diagnosis in about one hour.

However, the Malaria Antigen test can not provide any qualitative results. As it only tests if tf the patient is infected with Malaria the doctors can not determine if the infection is severe or not. It also can not detect if the patient is infected with the different species of Malaria.

Smear Test

The Malaria Smear test is one of the most widely accepted Malaria tests as it provides both quantitative and qualitative results. The Malaria Smear test is performed with a thick Smear and a thin Smear to test the presence of Plasmodium parasite in the blood sample.

If the test came back negative but the doctor suspects the malaria infection you might be asked to take the test multiple times with eight hours difference. This test can provide detailed insights into the infection, especially about the severity of the same.

Which test should you take?

Although both tests have their upside and shortcomings, when it comes to choosing the test you should take, you should look at the symptoms and condition you are in. If you already have all the symptoms of Malaria, you should consider the Malaria Smear test as it can provide deep insights regarding the infection along with the severity of the condition.

On the other hand, if you have a few symptoms and want to ensure if you have been infected with Malaria or not, the Malaria Antigen test should be your primary choice as it is quick and there is a low chance of human error.
